But while there is a lot to celebrate in our past, there is almost as much opportunity ahead of us. We are seeking a Director of Technical Operations!

Backblaze is expanding rapidly, and our Director of Technical Operations will lead several system engineering teams that design, develop, integrate, and deploy scalability systems and services in partnership with Backblaze application engineers. As a member of Backblaze's leadership team, the Director of System Development is responsible for driving the strategy and execution of initiatives that provide additional functionality, increase operational efficiency and improve service performance metrics (availability, responsiveness, durability, serviceability, etc).

What You'll Do:

  • Lead team of 15+ system, network, database and software engineers that:
    • Develop systems needed by customers and business units in 6+ months out
    • Integrate in-house and 3rd party software and hardware into production solutions
    • Build system automation and monitoring platforms
    • Collaborate with Supply Chain to optimize server specs
    • Work with Production Systems to ensure smooth and supportable deployments
    • Troubleshoot escalated production issues and address root cause
  • Lead & coordinate development efforts for the largest & most complex initiatives
  • Establish department level objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Recruit & coach team to support Backblaze and individual career objectives 
  • Build strong cross functional relationships
  • Manage department budget

The Right Fit:

  • Significant experience in cloud-scale data center systems and services
  • A passion for process improvement and project management at scale
  • 6+ years of management experience, with at least 3 years at Director level
  • 3+ years of hands-on technical experience is a field related to team’s focus
  • Must be a good communicator and mentor with executive potential
  • Corporate San Mateo, CA office preferred, but not required with experience managing remotely
